I absolutely love my city. I spent a lot of time visiting family in Portland growing up, and in May of 2016 I officially moved to The City of Roses. Portland offers unique opportunities to experience the best of nature and culture all within the same day. Well…you couldn’t possibly experience all of what PDX has to offer in one day but you can get a taste. Keep reading to see how to get the most of what my city has to offer.
Nature Walking at Mt Tabor
Mt Tabor offers incredible views of downtown Portland as well as the surrounding landscape. For those who enjoy a good walk there are trails surrounding the mountain which will take between ten to thirty minutes to reach the top (depending on which route your choose). If you’re not into breaking a sweat you can opt to drive (nearly) to the top, sit on one of the many benches, and take in the stunning views. No need to wear any special sports equipment just some shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and light layers as PDX weather can change quickly.
Yoga at Yoga Union
Portland has an endless list of amazing yoga studios but my favorite is Yoga Union. I love browsing their boutique for treasures made by Portland artisans and resources from famous yogis and fitness experts. The teachers are knowledgeable and full of heart. My favorite class to catch is Primal Vinyasa with Annie Adamson. After class be sure to refresh with a juice from their in-house cafe “Fern Kitchen.”
Whew! All that exercise is gonna burn some serious calories. Before getting on with rest of the day change out of those sweaty yoga clothes and slip on something simple to carry you from day to evening. Portland is all about keeping things casual so anything that is comfortable will have you fitting right it. I’m a style girl so I have to add a few special details to feel my best. My go to accessories are a felt hat, a cute bag, and some simple layered necklaces to pull everything together-it’s an easy combo that adds some it-factor to any outfit.
Brunch at Fried Egg I’m in Love
Portland is famous for its food carts which offer just about any cuisine you are craving. For breakfast there is nowhere I love more than “Fried Egg I’m In Love.” You can probably guess by the name that they serve up some amazing fried egg sandwiches. The toast is perfectly crisp, the yolk is delightfully runny, the staff is friendly, and all at a great price. I always get the “Free-Range Against the Machine,” tomato, avocado, and havarti cheese and add Aardvark Aioli. (excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin). They have gluten free and vegan options and I have never been served anything short of scrumptious.
Coffee at Coava
Do yourself a favor and save your caffeination fix for Coava. Coava is one of the best roasters in Portland. Their Hawthorne location is just a quick walk down the street from “Fried Egg.”Grab a cup of their perfect house brew to go, or sit down and read a book while sipping on their honey latte.
Browsing at Powell’s
I feel instantly relaxed and inspired upon entering a good book store, it’s my happy place. Any book store will do but I have yet to find a one that doesn’t pale in comparison to the colossal collection at Powell’s City of Books in downtown Portland. I love getting lost in a section and opening one book after another. They have a section for just about any subject you imagine. You could easily walk around for hours (I could easily stay for days) so be sure to pay for enough parking.
Dinner In Downtown
For the sake of transparency I planned to grab dinner at Risorante Roma for this post (an amazing Italian restaurant) but they were remodeling. Then I ran out of light to take photos before deciding on another location. In the end I had dinner near my home instead. But here are a few other suggestions that are close to Powell’s:
Tasty and Alder
Portland City Grill
Jake’s Famous Crawfish
I dare you to not to have the best day ever if you make it through this whole list. Let me know if you have any favorite PDX spots I should have included.
Love and light,
P.S. I’m planning to make “A Perfect Day In:” a series to feature different cities and bloggers. If you are a blogger and know the best things to do in your city email me to inquire about guest posting.
