For me style is a walking art, the one creative outlet that most intimately reflects who I am as an individual. And as a earth conscious consumer it is important to me to make sustainable style decisions. Making better, more ethical choices for the environment doesn’t have to be complicated and you don’t have to sacrifice personal style to get started.
Sustainable Style: How To Get Started
1. Buy Less
The simplest, easiest way have more sustainable style is by buying fewer things in the first place. Reducing our shopping habits can help eliminate the waste caused in all levels of the fashion stream. If you’re looking to reduce how much you consume and maybe clear out what you already own start by watching this movie.
2. Take Care of What You Own
3. Quality Over Quantity
Tips 1 and 2 are made significantly easier when the items you own are made of good materials. When I was in college I would buy crazy amounts of fast fashion items every month and very few of them lasted more than a few wears. While their low cost may have been appealing at first I could have saved so much money over the years by investing in higher quality clothes sooner. When you purchase items made with good quality fabrics they last longer, look better, and are more durable.
Know Your Style
If you are interested in fashion you have inevitably experimented with different styles and trends but eventually most people end up finding a distinct style. Once you’ve found your style EMBRACE IT. You will be happier with the pieces you own and use them longer. When you identify the colors, shapes, and fabrics it is easy to build a wardrobe you love and avoid buyers remorse.
